Wax Weekend: Photo Encaustic

May 19 - 21, Fri - Sun, $450 (only 2 spots left!)
Friday from 7-9 pm and Sat/Sun from 10am-4pm
Location: Portland, Oregon

In this class we'll focus on several exciting ways to combine encaustic and photography. You'll learn my favorite techniques for hand coloring photographs, layering images and natural materials together using encaustic collage, creating image transfers from your personal photographs and discovering your own unique look for this creative process.

Here's what we'll cover: All of my Wax Weekend workshops are easily accessible for someone with no experience working with encaustic, but I'll also offer rich, personalized instruction for artists with more advanced skills.

I keep my class sizes small, with a maximum of just 6 students, so everyone can learn at their own pace and I can offer you individualized attention. This allows me to help introduce beginners to this new medium while still challenging more experienced artists with advanced tips and techniques.

We'll meet for a couple of hours on Friday night to get to know each other and prepare some panels and images for the next day. Then we'll kick off 2 more wonderful days of art making as we experiment as a group, learning from each other as we go.

Most supplies will be provided including all encaustic medium, encaustic paint, brushes, paper, small boards and basic encaustic tools. Students will be asked to bring 1-2 panels around 8 x 10" for additional experimentation in combining the many techniques you'll learn in class.

After registration I'll send instructions on how to easily prepare your images which you can print at home on any type of printer. If you prefer not to bring your own images you can choose from some that I'll have available for you. Space is limited to 6 students and classes tend to fill very quickly.

Layered Encaustic Photo Collage

Bring photographs and other lightweight materials to layer into your paintings. You'll be amazed at how simple it is to collage with wax instead of glue to incorporate papers, dried plants and even small objects. Don't worry if you haven't tried anything like this before, the medium is very forgiving. I'll have lots of collage materials available for you to play with and you can work in any style you choose.

Hand Coloring Waxed Photos

Hand coloring is a fun way to revitalize vintage photos or make new ones look older. The look you achieve depends on your color choices so you can make your images look very contemporary too. For this technique we'll use pastels, pigment sticks and artists crayons to add color to black and white photographs. The best part? If you don't like the color you can easily remove it until the end when we set it with heat.

Easy Image Transfers

Transferring photographs onto wax gives crisp magical look or a beautifully rustic effect depending on a few simple choices. Bring your favorite images and I'll help you copy them onto the appropriate paper for easy transfers. With some practice you can even overlap several transfers between layers of wax while painting in between them. We'll use a torch to fuse these, so if you're not familiar with using one you'll learn that too.
