Wax Week: Secret Messages

Fri-Sun, July 7 - 9, 2017. $425
Friday from 7-9 pm and Sat/Sun from 10am-4pm
Location: Portland, Oregon

I find the idea of secret messages to be exciting and mysterious! What will yours be? We'll talk about why you might want to include messages in your work and I'll show you several of my favorite ways to include overt or obscured text, symbols and more as part of your encaustic paintings. Come with an open mind and ready to make experimental work in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

This 2 1/2-day intensive workshop combining some of my most popular techniques. We'll be working with encaustic and ink, altered papers, customized stamps, transfer papers, oil paint. If you haven't worked with encaustic before I'll get you up to speed on the basics that you'll build on throughout our time together.

All of my Wax Weekend workshops are easily accessible for someone with little or no experience in working with encaustic, but will also offer rich, personalized instruction for those who have more experience. I keep my class sizes very small, a maximum of 6 students, so everyone can learn at their own pace. This allows me to help introduce beginners to this new medium and still challenge more experienced artists with advanced tips and techniques.

If you need to split the class fee into more than one payment, you can save your spot by starting with a deposit.

Most supplies will be provided including encaustic medium, encaustic paint, brushes, paper, small boards, ink, paper, materials for stamping and transfers plus basic encaustic tools. Students will be asked to bring 1 panel around 8 x 10. You will will receive detailed information on these as well as a list of optional items upon registration. Space is limited to 6 students and classes tend to fill very quickly.

Hotels and Transportation

Traveling to join us? If you're not from Portland, here's a list of hotels, transportation options and sightseeing.

Here's What We'll Cover: Collage with Altered Papers

There are many commercial papers to choose from, but wouldn't you also like to make something unique? I'll share several of my favorite techniques for adding words, symbols and marks to papers that are easy to collage into your encaustic paintings. Easy embellishments can even be made to exiting papers to personalize them. Some of the same techniques you'll use to create your altered papers can also be used directly on the wax for an even more unusual look. I can't wait to show you this!

Mixing Media with Inks, Foils, Stamps and Oils

We'll explore several ways of incorporating your messages both above and below the wax using stamps, oils and inks with both traditional and non-traditional tools. There's even a really easy blast-from-the-past method that will make you laugh. I'll help you push your paintings in new directions as you expand your visual vocabulary.

Text Transfers and Transfer Papers

Your secret messages can be made up of individual letters, words, quotes or even symbols and we'll explore all of these in this session. Bring your favorite quotes and symbols to embed, or create your own in class. I'll help you copy them onto the appropriate paper so we can transfer them onto your wax surface. With some practice you can even overlap several transfers between layers of wax while painting in between them. We'll use a torch to fuse these, so if you're not familiar with using one you'll learn that too.
