HOW SPONTANEOUS ARE YOU?
I recently traveled to Hawaii to attend my š¤th high school reunion, where I got to hang out with friends who I rarely see except on social media. I also reconnected with a friend I hadnāt seen in decades!
Scott teaches second grade, and invited me to share a class with his budding artists. He was so enthusiastic that I said yes immediately. Scott recently introduced his kids to working with watercolor, so I was happy I brought some with me for sketching.
I took a couple of hours to play, and came up with a fun way to paint jellyfish that would also teach them a few more watercolor techniques. Another friend at the reunion asked to join us, so with Lucy onboard we had a team of artists from 3 states! (She also took most of these wonderful photos.) Scott is extending the project now by having the kids write about their creations!
I donāt often teach children, so Scott and Lucy were the best collaborators I could have hoped for! It was fun for all of us, especially the kids, and Iām left with wonderful memories of painting like a kid again.
This day wouldnāt have come together without the initial spark from Scott, and the spontaneity of everyone involved. Itās important to get out of our regular routines occasionally, and even better when you can contribute to your community. Iāve included some photos of our art adventure below, hoping they might spark some ideas for you too. Keep those creative ideas flowing!
>> Like many teachers, Scott buys the art supplies for his class himself. These kids are so lucky! Iām planning to send them a box of materials from my studio in mid-September, so if you have anything youād like to contribute please let me know. Scottās wish list for the kids includes art paper, watercolors, brushes, sketch pencils, color chalk, and modeling clay. Mahalo to all of those who have already offered some support!
